5 Evidence-Based Ways to Support a Healthier Inflammatory Response.
If you’re living with an autoimmune disease, you’ve probably heard the word inflammation more times than you can count.

But what does reducing inflammation actually look like in everyday life?
Autoimmune diseases occur when the immune system mistakenly targets the body’s own tissues. Depending on the condition, this immune activity can contribute to inflammation, pain, fatigue, digestive symptoms, joint problems, skin changes, and many other symptoms.
Medical treatment for autoimmune disease is important, and lifestyle changes should complement—not replace—appropriate medical care. At the same time, nutrition, exercise, sleep, correcting nutritional deficiencies, and other modifiable factors can all be valuable parts of a comprehensive health plan.
Here are five ways to support a healthier inflammatory response while living with autoimmune disease.

1. Build Your Diet Around Anti-Inflammatory Foods
You don’t necessarily need an extreme or highly restrictive diet to eat in a way that supports your health.
A better starting point is often focusing on what you can add.
Build meals primarily around nutrient-dense whole foods such as colorful vegetables and fruits, berries, leafy greens, beans and legumes when tolerated, nuts and seeds, extra-virgin olive oil, fatty fish, high-quality protein, and minimally processed carbohydrates appropriate for your individual needs.
A Mediterranean-style eating pattern is an excellent framework for many people because it naturally emphasizes plant foods, fiber, healthy fats, fish, and minimally processed foods.
At the same time, consider reducing foods that can make up a disproportionate amount of the modern diet, including heavily processed foods, excess added sugars, and refined carbohydrates.
Do You Need to Eliminate Gluten, Dairy or Other Foods?
Not automatically.
Certain autoimmune diseases require specific dietary restrictions—celiac disease is an obvious example where gluten avoidance is medically necessary. But eliminating entire food groups without a clear reason can unnecessarily restrict your diet and sometimes make it more difficult to obtain adequate nutrients.
Food choices should be individualized based on your diagnosis, symptoms, nutritional needs, and medical history.
The goal isn’t the most restrictive diet. It’s the most nourishing diet that works for your body.

2. Move Your Body Consistently
When you’re dealing with autoimmune fatigue or pain, exercise can feel counterintuitive.
But appropriate physical activity can be an important part of supporting overall health, maintaining muscle, improving cardiovascular fitness, supporting insulin sensitivity, and preserving mobility.
The key word is appropriate.
Depending on your condition and current ability, this might include walking, resistance training, cycling, swimming, mobility work, yoga, or other forms of moderate activity.
Strength training can be particularly valuable because maintaining skeletal muscle becomes increasingly important as we age.
More isn’t always better, however.
During a significant flare or period of severe fatigue, your body may need a different level of activity than it does when your disease is well controlled. Exercise should be scaled to your symptoms, physical capacity, and guidance from your healthcare team.
Consistency often matters more than intensity.

3. Protect Your Sleep
Sleep isn’t simply downtime.
Sleep and immune function are closely connected, and chronic sleep disruption can affect inflammatory signaling, metabolic health, mood, appetite, pain perception, and recovery.
If you’re living with autoimmune disease, consistently poor sleep deserves attention rather than being accepted as something you simply have to live with.
Start with the fundamentals: maintain a reasonably consistent sleep/wake schedule, create a dark and cool sleeping environment, get daylight exposure during the day, limit alcohol close to bedtime, and be mindful of late caffeine.
But also ask why you aren’t sleeping.
Pain, menopause, restless legs, sleep apnea, medications, anxiety, reflux, and other medical conditions can all interfere with sleep.
Sometimes better sleep hygiene helps. Sometimes the underlying problem needs to be identified and treated.

4. Use Supplements Strategically—Not Randomly
This is an area where people living with autoimmune disease are often overwhelmed.
Search online and you’ll find enormous lists of supplements claiming to “heal inflammation” or “reset the immune system.”
The science is much more nuanced.
Some supplements have been investigated for inflammatory and autoimmune conditions, but evidence varies by supplement and—importantly—by the specific autoimmune disease.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
EPA and DHA, the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids commonly found in fish oil, have been studied for their effects on inflammatory pathways.
Evidence for treating established autoimmune diseases isn’t uniform, however, so omega-3 supplementation should not be presented as a universal autoimmune treatment.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D plays important roles in immune function.
One particularly interesting randomized trial involving more than 25,000 older adults found that vitamin D supplementation during approximately five years of treatment was associated with a lower incidence of autoimmune disease. However, subsequent follow-up found that the apparent protective effect did not persist after supplementation ended. This research involved prevention of new autoimmune disease, not proof that vitamin D treats an existing autoimmune disorder.
That distinction matters.
For someone who is deficient, identifying and appropriately correcting vitamin D deficiency may still be an important part of overall care.
Curcumin
Curcumin—the primary bioactive compound associated with turmeric—has received considerable attention for its potential effects on inflammatory signaling.
Research is promising in some areas but isn’t strong enough to treat curcumin as a universal therapy for autoimmune disease. For example, clinical research in lupus has produced mixed results.
Magnesium
Magnesium is essential for hundreds of processes throughout the body and may be appropriate when dietary intake is inadequate or deficiency is present.
But magnesium shouldn’t automatically be prescribed simply because someone has an autoimmune disease.
Probiotics
The microbiome and immune system are closely connected, making probiotics an exciting area of research.
However, probiotics aren’t interchangeable. Different strains can have different effects, and taking a random high-dose probiotic isn’t necessarily the right strategy for every person—particularly when significant gastrointestinal symptoms are present.
What About NAC, Quercetin and Other “Anti-Inflammatory” Supplements?
Compounds such as N-acetylcysteine (NAC), quercetin, zinc, selenium, and others are being studied in a variety of health conditions.
But “anti-inflammatory” doesn’t automatically mean “appropriate for autoimmune disease.”
The correct supplement depends on the individual.
That’s why we prefer:
Test when appropriate → identify the need → supplement intentionally → reassess.
Supplements can interact with medications, be inappropriate with certain medical conditions, and become harmful at excessive doses.

5. Work With a Provider Who Understands the Whole Picture
This may be the most important point.
There are more than 80 recognized autoimmune diseases, and two people with the same diagnosis can still have very different symptoms, nutritional needs, medications, comorbidities, and lifestyles.
There should not be one universal “autoimmune protocol.”
A comprehensive approach may consider your specific diagnosis, symptoms and disease activity; medications and potential interactions; thyroid and hormone health when relevant; metabolic health; nutritional status and deficiencies; gastrointestinal symptoms; sleep; activity and recovery; and other medical conditions.
That information can then be used to build a plan specifically for you.
Can Functional Medicine Cure Autoimmune Disease?
This is an important question—and one that deserves a straightforward answer.
Functional and integrative medicine should not promise to cure autoimmune disease.
Many autoimmune conditions are chronic diseases that require ongoing medical management.
Where an integrative approach can be valuable is in asking additional questions:
Are nutritional deficiencies present? Is sleep being addressed? Is the patient getting adequate nutrition and movement? Are gastrointestinal symptoms being evaluated appropriately? Are there other medical conditions contributing to fatigue or pain? How can lifestyle interventions complement conventional treatment?
The goal is not to replace rheumatology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, dermatology, or other specialty care.
The goal is coordinated, whole-person care.

Living Beyond Autoimmune Disease
An autoimmune diagnosis may be part of your health story, but it doesn’t have to become your entire identity.
Reducing the burden of chronic inflammation isn’t about finding one miracle supplement or following the strictest diet you can tolerate.
It’s about consistently supporting your body through good nutrition, appropriate movement, restorative sleep, targeted supplementation when indicated, and individualized medical care.
