As a Nutritionist and personal trainer, I have assisted thousands of individuals in their weight loss journeys. Some have opted for weight loss medications and supplements. Although I aim to support my clients' choices regarding their bodies, I have seldom recommended medications for weight loss.
My perspective on the increasing popularity of peptides, particularly GLP-1s, has changed. Current research highlights numerous benefits beyond weight loss and diabetes, which I find intriguing.
These benefits include reducing the risk of certain types of cancer, enhancing fertility, and even decreasing markers for Alzheimer’s.
In response to growing interest and usage, I have established protocols for my clients to optimize results and manage common side effects. These protocols have helped in minimizing side effects, promoting healthy lifestyle habits, and maintaining weight loss.

Track Your Food
I highly recommend keeping track of your food intake when using these weight loss medications.
If you're losing weight quickly, it's likely that you're losing more muscle than fat. Low-calorie diets tend to break down muscle.
If you're not losing weight, it's likely that your metabolism is significantly slowing due to low calorie intake and minimal physical activity.
Neither of these options will provide you with what you're seeking, particularly rapid weight loss. A significant reason many people report regaining the weight after stopping the medication is due to muscle loss.
It's crucial to keep in mind that despite changes in your appetite, the fundamental principles of weight loss remain the same. The body continues to lose weight in the usual manner. Moreover, extremely low-calorie diets can lead to muscle loss and a slowed metabolism.
The answer? Ensure that you consume a sufficient amount of nutrient-rich foods daily. This approach will lead to weight loss by reducing body fat instead of losing muscle, organ tissue, or water.
Determine your daily calorie requirements, ensuring a reasonable deficit for fat loss while maintaining your muscle mass.

Managing Blood Sugar
These medications were initially designed to assist people with diabetes, which is a major reason why blood sugar management is a prominent topic.
Besides the processes promoted by the medication, low-calorie diets can exacerbate low blood sugar levels.
Low blood sugar may lead to nausea, fatigue, headaches, and lightheadedness.
Managing low blood sugar is most effective with food, particularly protein. In emergencies, carbs and sugars are utilized. Protein helps keep blood sugar stable to prevent such emergencies.
Ideally, you have already chosen to monitor your food intake. Make it a priority to consume sufficient protein. Animal protein, as opposed to supplements and shakes, has been demonstrated to help regulate blood sugar levels.
Start by eating your protein and vegetables, then wait 15 minutes before consuming your carbohydrates. This is the eating method used by people with hypoglycemia. It works for them and will work for you too.
Monitoring your food intake can assist in consuming the appropriate amount to maintain muscle, decrease body fat, and control various side effects associated with low blood sugar.
Managing Digestion
Don't delay in determining if slow motility is a concern for your constipation. Start by increasing your intake of water, fruits, and vegetables immediately. Naturally boosting fiber and water won't harm you.
This should help ease or lessen the uncomfortable digestion side effects. If it doesn't, your body is likely to adapt within a few weeks. If not, consult your provider.
If you feel nauseous, consider eating a starchy carbohydrate. If this doesn't alleviate the issue, consult your provider. This side effect should also subside within a few weeks.

Establish healthy habits while you have coverage from medication
It's the perfect moment to adopt a healthy lifestyle by incorporating the best daily personal habits.
Focus on eating well, exercising consistently, prioritizing strength training, staying hydrated, and getting enough sleep.
These practices are essential for sustaining weight loss and developing a strong body.
Lose a Little Extra
After stopping the medication, you will likely gain weight due to a natural increase in calories as your appetite returns.
I suggest aiming to lose five pounds below your target weight to allow for some flexibility with the gain.
You should discuss this strategy with your provider.
Tapper off the medication while Reverse Dieting
Most providers suggest gradually reducing the medication once you have achieved your goal. I recommend doing this alongside reverse dieting.
If you have been tracking your food, you should have an idea of how many calories you have been consuming. Gradually add calories back in until you reach a maintenance level.
If your provider does not require this, I suggest discussing this strategy with them to see if it suits you.
